buxton churches together

We are also part of Churches Together in Buxton. Read more about this here.

We support Transition Buxton’s project ‘Plastic Clever Buxton’ to become a plastic-free community (Surfers Against Sewage initiative) and, in February 2020, we made a pledge to remove the use of three items of single-use plastics from our premises and activities.

Fairtrade church

We are a Fairtrade church and seek to use Fairtrade products whenever possible, particularly at our twice-weekly café. Each year, we organise events to support the Fairtrade organisation and continue raising awareness of the work they carry out. We also sell Kilombero rice from Malawi. Purchasing this rice from small scale farmers enables them to pay for their children to attend school. Find out more about Fairtrade here.

We are an All We Can partner church. All We Can is an international development and emergency relief organisation. Focusing on those in greatest need, it is inspired by Christian principles, and is an integral part of the Methodist family. As a partner church, we pledge to raise money for All We Can projects and learn about their work being done with some of the world’s poorest communities.  Since becoming a partner church in 2017, we have learnt more about communities in Zimbabwe and Malawi and the projects that make a real difference to people’s lives. We are also a Christian Aid church and organise the annual door-to-door collections during Christian Aid week and fundraising events throughout the year. Find out more about Christian Aid here.

toilet twinning

The eight toilets at Buxton Methodist Church are twinned with toilets around the world as part of the Toilet Twinning initiative.  This aims to help bring clean water and safe sanitation to the world’s poorest people by linking our toilets with a latrine in Africa or Asia. 2.3 billion people do not have somewhere safe and hygienic to go to the toilet (WHO/Unicef) and this initiative aims to raise money to provide more communities with latrines and clean water.
